re what a neighbourhood infill might suggest and potentially catalyse. Whereas this is an exploratory study, it is also because we are duty bound to contribute to discourse that might inform the future of real estate in Rwanda. Therefore, in studying an opportunity for an infill development in an existing housing neighbourhood, the following scheme explores what design programs and design approaches are viable. In doing so, we are experimenting two ideas and what they bring to the urban design question: I) Adding diversity. You may note the proposed programs that suggest more housing typologies, spaces to let among other key needs like “domestic” shopping, recreation and opportunities for extended community engagement. Diversity perhaps presents two potential outcomes: first, catalysing social enterprise and second, increasing the future value of a neighbourhood. II) Showcasing some “new” models of single family housing. Whereas the entire scheme is mixed per say, we draw your attention to the villas. We often wonder to ourselves how far the architecture of single family housing can be enhanced. We see opportunities for designing with the site, optimising square metres and tastefully delivering a “new” aesthetic.
